What problems will BOTOX® treat?
In addition to over 180 medical uses, BOTOX® has many cosmetic uses,
including treatment of frown lines, worry lines across the forehead, crow's
feet lines, smile lines, lines around the mouth, down-turned corners of the
mouth, chin wrinkles, neck lines, "marionette's" lines running down from the
corners of the mouth, and excessively sweaty armpits, palms, and feet.
How
frequently can/should I have injections?
BOTOX® can be used every 3-4 months, depending on how the muscles respond.
Do the injections hurt?
The needles for BOTOX® are much smaller than those used for collagen and
Restylane®; patients are often surprised at how little pain BOTOX®
injections cause.
What
are the risks?
The most common side effect is a mild amount of droopiness in an eyelid
("sleepy" eye) that lasts about 10 days without treatment. This is a rare
occurrence. As with any time you get an injection anywhere in your body, a
small bruise is possible.
What is acne?
Acne is the term
for the blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps
(cysts or nodules) that can appear typically on the face, neck, chest, back,
shoulders and upper arms. Seventeen million Americans currently have acne,
making it the most common skin disease in the country.
Do
only teenagers get acne?
While
acne affects mostly teenagers, and almost all teenagers have some form of
acne, adults of any age can have it.
What causes
acne?
It is not yet
known what causes acne, but suspected factors include an increase in
androgens (male sex hormones) associated with puberty in both boys and
girls, hormonal changes during pregnancy or when starting or stopping the
use of birth control pills, heredity, certain drugs such as androgens and
lithium, and the use of greasy cosmetics.
Chocolate and oily or greasy foods can cause acne, right?
Wrong.
What you eat does not have much of an affect on acne. Neither does dirt or
stress.
What causes excessive hair
growth?
Excessive hair
growth may arise from puberty, pregnancy, menopause, heredity, medication,
diseases or many other causes.
How does laser hair
removal work?
Lasers
produce highly focused, intense beams of light that are absorbed by dark
pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface and converted to
heat, destroying the follicles and preventing hair growth for up to two
years.
How many treatments are required?
Multiple
treatments are required for complete hair removal because the follicle must
be “active” at the time of treatment and not all follicles are active at the
same time.
Are
treatments painful?
Not
usually. Treatments are needle-free and anesthesia-free, with most patients
feeling nothing more than a slight sting like the snap of a rubber band.
What can laser resurfacing
treat?
Laser resurfacing
can reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, uneven
pigmentation and superficial scarring, usually on the face.
How
does it work?
A
carbon dioxide (CO 2) laser beam of intense, precisely-focused light
vaporizes the surface skin and reveals the undamaged layer beneath.
How
long is the treatment?
The
procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to two hours depending on the
size and severity of the area being treated and whether it is combined with
other procedures such as a browlift or eyelid surgery for even more dramatic
results.
How does Microdermabrasion
work?
The particles scrape away the surface layer of aging or damaged skin, which
is then brushed off with the Microdermabrasion vacuum tool, with no need for
anesthesia. Only a small amount of skin is removed, so damaged areas on
sensitive areas such as the face, chest, neck, arms and hands can be
treated.
How
long before I can see results?
Results are comparable to a light chemical peel and should be immediately
visible, although multiple treatments are usually required for full effect.
Are all skin types eligible
for treatment?
Yes. In fact, the procedure is particularly helpful for Asian and
dark-skinned patients who risk skin discoloration with other treatment
options.
Can
other procedures be performed at the same time?
Microdermabrasion is often performed in conjunction with other skin renewal
procedures, such as laser treatment and chemical peels.
Is Restylane® effective?
Yes. Clinical studies show that patients injected with Restylane for the
treatment of facial folds achieved an optimal cosmetic result. These results
were sustained for a longer period of time (as much as twice as long) than
with collagen.
How
does Restylane work?
Restylane works in two ways: Upon injection, into the mid to deep dermis
(middle skin layer), the NASHA™ gel adds volume and fullness to smooth
facial wrinkles and folds. It integrates into dermal tissue, then attracts
and binds to water molecules to help maintain volume.
How long do results last?
The average treatment results last six months or
longer.
Is
Restylane safe?
Yes. Restylane has been used safely by dermatologists and plastic surgeons
since 1996 worldwide. Because Restylane is non-animal-based and fully
biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. The most commonly reported
side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site.
These effects typically resolve within two to three days.
